3 Days Itinerary for a Marrakech Desert Tour
So, what should you expect from this incredible desert tour?
This desert has a lot to offer, but we will stick with an amazing 3 days itinerary that provides an incredible travel experience.
Day 1: Marrakech – Atlas Mountains – Ait Ben Haddou – Boumalne Dades
Begin your adventure with an 8:00 AM pick-up in Marrakech, then travel across the High Atlas Mountains via the scenic Tizi n’Tichka Pass. Enjoy several photo stops along the way as you pass Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints.
Your first main visit is the UNESCO-listed Ait Ben Haddou, a 16th-century fortified village famous for its traditional earthen architecture. Many international films and series were shot here, including Game of Thrones, Gladiator, and The Mummy.
After exploring the ksar, enjoy free time for lunch before continuing toward Ouarzazate, known as the Hollywood of Morocco. Here, you will visit the Taourirt Kasbah and see the exterior of the Atlas Film Studios.
Next, the journey continues to the scenic Rose Valley and the Dades Valley, two regions known for their lush landscapes and dramatic rock formations.
As the day ends, arrive at the Dades Gorges, surrounded by impressive cliffs and winding roads. Check into your hotel, enjoy dinner, and rest for the night.
Day 2: Boumalne Dades – Todra Gorge – Erfoud – Merzouga Desert
After breakfast, continue your journey toward Tinghir, where you will visit the spectacular Todra Gorge—towering canyon cliffs shaped naturally over millions of years. Enjoy some time to walk inside the gorge, take photos, and appreciate the dramatic landscapes.
From Todra, the trip continues through the beautiful Saharan oasis regions with their palm groves and green valleys, heading toward Erfoud, a town known for its fossil workshops and desert gateways.
Next, we drive to Merzouga, home of the famous Erg Chebbi dunes—some of the tallest dunes in Morocco. Upon arrival, you will be welcomed with a refreshing mint tea, following traditional Moroccan hospitality.
In the late afternoon, begin your camel ride through the golden dunes toward your desert camp. Enjoy breathtaking views of the sunset as the colors shift across the sand.
After settling into your comfortable tent, enjoy a delicious Moroccan dinner followed by a Berber music performance around the campfire. Relax under a sky filled with stars before spending the night in the calm of the Sahara.
Day 3: Merzouga Desert – Alnif – Marrakech
Wake up early this morning to witness a beautiful Sahara sunrise—one of the most unforgettable moments of the entire trip. After enjoying the view, return to the camp for breakfast and prepare for the journey back.
The drive to Marrakech is long but filled with amazing scenery and memories from your desert adventure. Along the way, we will make several stops for coffee, lunch, and photo breaks, giving you the chance to stretch, relax, and capture the landscapes of southern Morocco.
Continue driving through the High Atlas Mountains, passing Berber villages and panoramic viewpoints.
You will arrive in Marrakech by late afternoon or evening, depending on traffic and the number of stops made during the trip.
